Entry Requirements

Required Experience:

The Clinical Research Trainer Accreditation is aimed at experienced clinical research professionals who are seeking professional recognition and independent validation of their competence and credentials. Applicants should therefore already have experience as a working Clinical Research Trainer (or relevant experience from a closely related role). No training is included as part of the accreditation program.

All IAOCR Professional Accreditation Programs include ICH-GCP E6(R3) Accreditation, recognising its critical importance in clinical research. Achieving this additional accreditation formally validates your ICH-GCP expertise and further enhances your professional credentials. All IAOCR Accreditations align with the E6(R3) requirements set out in the updated ICH GCP guidelines. As with the Clinical Research Essentials Accreditation assessment, no ICH-GCP training is included in the program.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Self-Certification Before Enrolment:

Before enrolling for the Clinical Research Trainer Accreditation, you must self-certify that your career background, experience and prior training align with the competency areas assessed for both Clinical Research Trainer and ICH-GCP E6(R3) Accreditation. You can view the competency areas below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Accreditation assessment involve?

Shortly after enrolment, you will be sent a link to access your online assessment portal. The assessment is a blend of multiple-choice questions and interactive scenarios designed to test your competence as a Clinical Research Trainer (This is your ‘Portfolio of Evidence’).

You will also be required to deliver a ‘live’ online 30 minute presentation to your IAOCR Assessor as part of this accreditation.  Date options will be provided to you following initial registration.

Upon completion of your assessment and delivery of your live online session,  your portfolio will be sent to the IAOCR Assessment team for review and independent verification. If you have successfully passed the accreditation you will be awarded the following:

  • Certificate of Accreditation
  • Designatory letters Q-IAOCR to evidence your IAOCR Internationally Qualified status
  • Electronic ‘Professional Accreditation Mark’ displaying your award date, your professional registration number and your status – Q-IAOCR Internationally Qualified Clinical Research Trainer
  • Electronic Accreditation Marks for ICH-GCP E6(R3) and Foundations in Clinical Research displaying award date and your professional registration number

How long does the assesment take to complete?

The ICH-GCP and Foundations in Clinical Research accreditations are completed online and take approximately 1 hour each.

For the Q-IAOCR Clinical Research Trainer, on average, the assessment takes 4 – 5 hours to complete (plus a 30 minute delivery of a live online presentation to the IAOCR Competence Assessor). You can complete the online question and answer part of the assessment in your own time, but you must ensure that your final submission adheres to the deadline for assessment submission.

Why do I need this accreditation?

The Internationally Qualified Clinical Research Trainer Accreditation (Q-IAOCR) is relevant to anyone involved in delivering training within a clinical research setting. Individuals must provide evidence that they can demonstrate all the relevant core competencies expected of a competent clinical research trainer*. The accreditation process is focused on determining whether someone has the skills, knowledge and behaviours to fulfil their role, measured against a set of robust accredited assessment criteria which have been developed from the core competency framework validated by the industry.

All individuals enrolling for Q-IAOCR Clinical Research Trainer will also be assessed for ICH-GCP and Foundations in Clinical Research as part of this accreditation. In recognition of the essential role educators provide in supporting competency development in others, IAOCR has developed this unique package of accreditations specifically for those involved in clinical research training and development.

The Internationally Qualified Clinical Research Trainer (Q-IAOCR) professional standard was initially developed in 2018 and was updated in 2022 to incorporate the increasing use of innovative training technologies. Q-IAOCR Clinical Research Trainer is the global standard for clinical research training professionals. It is held by a significant number of freelance training professionals as well as employees of many of the world’s leading
clinical research organisations. Accreditation leads to professional recognition as a Clinical Research Trainer.

This unique and independently accredited program uses assessment criteria mapped to the International Standard Classification of Education developed by UNESCO. Accreditation leads to professional recognition as a Clinical Research Trainer. Participants successfully passing the accreditation assessment are awarded IAOCR Internationally Qualified Status (Q-IAOCR), which is recognizable by educational establishments and employers globally.

*Please note that IAOCR does not provide training as part of this accreditation assessment**. The purpose of our accreditations is to competence verify individuals who have received training through another provider, and/or gained the necessary ‘on the job’ experience to compete the accreditation assessment. (See entry requirements for further details).

** IAOCR also offers a comprehensive live online training programme for professionals who want to step into a training delivery role, or who are early into their career and would benefit from an accredited training programme designed specifically for Clinical Research Trainers. Already experienced trainers can opt for immediate enrolment onto the accreditation assessment without training. If you are interested in the combined training and accreditation programme please contact us.
